Electrical contractor estimating is where most small electrical shops win or lose the job before a single conduit gets bent. Miss the device count on a tenant improvement, forget the fire alarm tie-in, or price labor at a rate that ignores your real burden, and you eat the difference on your own dime. The wire and the panel are the easy part. The count, the labor units, and the scope gaps are what sink bids.

Pricing labor by feel instead of units

A journeyman does not install a recessed can in the same time as a receptacle. If you price everything at a blended hourly guess, you are cross-subsidizing the slow work with the fast work and hoping it averages out. It rarely does on device-heavy jobs.

Ignoring labor burden

Your bare wage is not your cost. Add payroll taxes, workers comp, which runs high for electrical trades, and any benefits, and your real labor cost is a good bit above the number on the paycheck. Assuming scope that belongs to someone else

Fire alarm, low voltage, the temp power, the disconnect for the rooftop unit. On a tenant improvement, the plans do not always say who owns each piece. Assume it is the GC's and you might get burned when the GC assumed it was yours. Write your inclusions and exclusions into the bid so the gap is visible before award.

Get the count and the line items down first

Rough-in happens before drywall, trim happens after paint, gear sets on its own schedule tied to lead times. If your bid assumes one continuous mobilization but the GC's schedule sends you back three times, your labor number is wrong. Price the mobilizations you will actually run.

Track field hours against the estimate

The estimate is a prediction. Job costing is the reality check. If you logged 120 hours to rough a floor you bid at 90, you want to know that this week, not at closeout. Time tracked against phases tells you where the bid was off so the next one is better.

Price added scope before you do the work

The owner wants six more receptacles in the conference room and a floor box. That is a change order, and it should be priced and signed before your crew pulls the wire. Verbal 'go ahead and add it' with no paper is how electrical subs give away labor. Document it and get the signature.

Consider a 200-amp residential service upgrade with a panel swap and a few added circuits. The estimator marks the takeoff: new meter base, panel, grounding, the feeder run, and the branch circuits to be brought up to code. Each gets its own line.

How do I count devices without missing any on a big plan set?+
