IBC

Also known as: International Building Code

The model building code for commercial and high-rise residential construction in the United States, adopted in some form by all 50 states.

The International Building Code (IBC) is the model code published by the International Code Council (ICC) governing commercial buildings, high-rise residential, and similar structures. It covers structural design, fire and life safety, accessibility, energy efficiency, mechanical, plumbing, and electrical systems by reference. The IBC is updated on a 3-year cycle (most recent: 2024).

All 50 states adopt some version of the IBC, though local jurisdictions can amend it. As a result, the specific code in force varies by jurisdiction even within a state. For residential construction (one- and two-family dwellings), the related IRC (International Residential Code) typically applies instead of IBC. Always verify the current adopted code with the local building department before bid or design.
